Since the launch of the online media industry’s Web Audit Initiative and Digital Watchdog Committee in late 2009, the Audit Bureaux of Australia (ABA) has been working with the industry to investigate and resolve a range of measurement issues affecting the market. The aim of this initiative has been to increase media buyers’ confidence in the numbers being used and also ensure their investment is protected from traps that may lead to wasted ad spend.

The Publisher Summary pages provide a new way to search through the ABA audited website data.
Media buyers and publishers can now easily find audited figures for all of a publisher’s titles in a single report which can be exported as a PDF Audit Certificate.

The extraordinary natural disasters that recently affected Queensland, Northern NSW, Northern Territory, Victoria and WA have impacted many publisher members of the Audit Bureau of Circulations and the Circulations Audit Board, by either prohibiting them from accessing these vital markets or, in some of the extreme cases, finding their business flooded out and brought to a standstill.

The Circulation Audit Board (CAB) is staging an informative one day conference focussing on the latest developments around media buying and selling at the Sydney Hilton on 21 July 2011. The event is open to advertisers, marketers, media buyers and publishing professionals and will discuss a range of issues affecting media today, ideas and opportunities from sales and marketing to publishing in the digital sphere. The ABC has appointed Simon Davies of OMD following the resignation of Tracie Michael from the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) Executive Committee and the General Committee.

Bryan O’Brien who served as the ABC’s Chairman for three years from 1988 -1991 recently passed away. O’Brien served on the ABC’s General Committee from December, 1982 as a newspaper representative before being elected as Chairman.

Sixteen representatives of the ABC’s General Committee have continued to commit to weekly Wednesday meetings that commenced on November 10. High on the agenda is a review and ongoing enhancement of the ABC’s Rules and Guidelines governing the definitions and reporting of Average Net Paid Sales.

The Circulations Audit Board is introducing stricter eLodgement deadlines for publisher members from the end of March 2011 onwards, in order to streamline operations and ensure a consistent and completely level playing field for all.

First Digital Media (FDM) received the ABA green tick in late January 2011 following the company’s decision to remove auto-refresh from all titles. They join publishers including Realestate.com.au, SBS, Allure Media and Austereo in responding to the Media Federation of Australia’s call for industry reform of this practice.
